How long does it take to become licensed?
Upon receipt of all required documents, applicant is licensed immediately.

What does the Board oversee?
We only have jurisdiction over optometrists. If a patient takes his/her prescription somewhere else and is not happy, it is not in our jurisdiction to require anything from opticians or optical shops.

Can the Board help get refunds from an optometrist for the customer?
Fee refunds are a part of the individual doctor's office policy and not in our jurisdiction.

How do I verify status of a license?
Contact the automated line, (304) 558-5901, enter the license name or social security number. You may also obtain information from our web site.

How do I change my address?
You may contact us via fax or e-mail or change it from our website.

How many hours of CE are required?
40 hours

How many hours can be obtained by correspondence?
10 hours

What is the timeframe for obtaining CE?
Effective July 2002, the Board of Optometry will be converting to a biennial (two year) license renewal system. All licenses will EXPIRE on August 1, 2008. There is NO 1-month GRACE period. A LATE RENEWAL FEE of $200 will be imposed if not postmarked by July 31, 2008.

No

How long are we responsible for patient records?
5 years from the date of the last visit.

What is the date of license expiration?
August 1 every other year.

What is the licensure renewal fee?
$650 dollars
